Are you in the market for a new air conditioning (A/C) system? If so, you should consider that you could gain immeasurable benefits from investing in a high-efficiency A/C system.
High-efficiency air conditioning systems have higher seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) ratings than most standard systems, so you can expect to see your monthly electricity costs reduced. A unit’s SEER indicates its cooling output compared to the energy that it consumes during the course of a typical cooling season. However, higher energy savings is not the only benefit you’ll realize from upgrading to a high-efficiency A/C unit. You also can expect your system to have a longer life span and your home comfort to be improved significantly.
The government has set minimum standards for efficiency for air conditioners at SEER 13. However, high-efficiency A/C systems begin at SEER 16. And with every SEER point, energy savings rise incrementally. Therefore, if your existing system has a SEER of 10, and you upgrade to a SEER 20 unit, your energy costs would be cut by half. Over time, those savings would quickly help you to recoup the higher upfront costs of purchasing and using a high-efficiency A/C.
Longer life span
Most air conditioners can last between 15 to 20 years, according to Energy Savers, and while part of what makes any system complete the full cycle of its useful life is how well the unit is maintained, other factors will dictate its life span.
In the case of high-efficiency A/C systems, they are manufactured with features that help them to last even longer. Namely, these units tend to have features that can operate at multiple stages. By comparison, standard systems operate at a single speed: high. This wears out the system much more quickly, because it’s working at full power whenever it’s on. A component, such as an air handler or compressor, that can function more of the time at lower speeds will use up its overall service hours less quickly—and the system will last longer as a result.
One of the key benefits of high-efficiency A/C is improved home comfort. Namely, these higher-rated units can offer better humidity control and indoor air quality, because of the multiple-stage cycling of air handlers and compressors. The longer run cycles at lower speeds, which allows more air to pass through the system’s air filter, and remove more moisture.
