Your HVAC motor efficiency has a large impact not just on your energy savings, but on your comfort as well. If you have an old HVAC motor, you may be spending way too much on energy. Fortunately, there are ways to improve your HVAC motor efficiency.
The standard motor used in older HVAC equipment was a permanent split capacitor (PSC) motor. PSC motors are unable to operate at anything less than full capacity that makes them very inefficient. Their all or nothing system of operating would mean that running them constantly would be incredibly expensive.
Newer electronically commutated motors (ECMs) are much more versatile in their operational abilities. They are available in variable-speed models that allow them to work at lower than full capacity levels. They also require less energy to run and these two combined benefits mean lower energy costs for you.
You can easily run a variable-speed ECM constantly in your home so that you have constant comfort without excessive energy costs. ECMs also start up and slowly build to a peak speed rather than jumping right up to a high operational level which helps to reduce humidity in the air. You also have control over how much air the ECM drives through so that you can manipulate the airflow rate in your home.
ECMs require little maintenance. They utilize ball bearings so there is less lubrication required. This also helps to avoid problems brought on by excessive friction. They also have a lower overall workload because of their ability to work at various levels. This too helps avoid burnouts and other problems that AC motors run into more often.
Old HVAC systems can often be retrofitted with variable-speed motors to improve their current efficiency. This can help you save 20 percent on your annual energy costs. These savings can help to offset the cost of the upgrade.
